President Donald Trump brought a surprise guest—Venezuela opposition leader Juan Guaidó–to his 2020 State of the Union address. Trump criticized Guaidó’s rival Nicolas Maduro before recognizing Guaidó in the House Chambers. “Mr. President, please take this message back to your homeland.
All Americans are united with the Venezuelan people in their righteous struggle for freedom,” Trump said. He also said that Guaidó is the “true and legitimate President of Venezuela.” The Trump administration was the first government to recognize Guaidó as Venezuela’s president, although Maduro maintains control of the country.
President Donald Trump delivered his annual State of the Union address on Tuesday, Feb. 4. The speech came the day before he is expected to be acquitted of articles of impeachment in the Senate and a day after voting in the 2020 presidential nomination process kicked off in Iowa.
